Water Footprint Calculation

A. Using Water Footprint Calculator

  1. Students can take Water Footprint Calculator (http://www.jcwise.hk/calculator/home), and compare water footprints among their daily life and discuss how they can reduce their water use.
  2. Students can also share the result of their own water footprint on their social media network and challenge their friends and families to reduce their footprint. Hashtags can be used as #savewater#reducewaterfootprints.

B. Designing a Water-conscientious Dietary Plan

In fact, the amount of water we consume is far more than we see because a large quantity of water is hidden. There is greatly more fresh water invisibly embedded in commodities and particularly in food that we consume in daily life. In this activity, students will calculate their dietary water footprint and later will discuss the result with their fellow classmates. Later, they will design a water-conscientious dietary plan.

  1. Invite students to share what they have had for dinner last night. Then, they can calculate their personal dietary water footprint by using the JC-Wise Water Footprint Calculator (http://www.jcwise.hk/calculator/home) which allow them to understand how much virtual water they have used.
  2. After getting the information, they can discuss the results with their peers and compare the amount of virtual water consumed by different foods.
  3. They can design a water-conscientious dietary menu that requires a low virtual water consumption.

  4. Share the plan and ideas with classmates and teacher.
