Background

The greatest portion of fresh water consumption in Hong Kong is domestic water usage. Therefore, it is important to educate the public on good household water usage habits. Among various channels, WSD has devoted much effort to education with aims to nurture a water conservation culture amongst the younger generation and establish a sustainable water-saving lifestyle. In 2015/16 school year, WSD launched the “Cherish Water Campus” Integrated Education Programme - Primary School (IEP) to raise students’ awareness of water conservation, encourage them to put water conservation into practice in school, society and at home, as well as convey the message to their peers and family. To reduce domestic water usage effectively, one of the activities of the “Let’s Save 10L Water 2.0” campaign, namely the “4-minute Shower Challenge”, strives to motivate primary school students in Hong Kong to finish shower in 4 minutes consecutively for a week and understand that reducing shower duration is a very effective way to reduce domestic water consumption. In 2021 and 2022, more than 7,000 and 9,800 students successfully took the 4-minute shower challenge and received a souvenir.
