According to the news, in January 2022, the Dongjiang River Basin, which supplies more then 90 percent of the water supply in Shenzhen, is suffering the worst drought since 1963. As a result of La Niña, the drought is likely to get more severe in the winter and spring.
It is estimated that the three main water reservoirs of Dongjiang River catch 55 percent of water less than previous years. Owe to Shenzhen's water stress exacerbated by its rapidly increasing population and economic activities, Shenzhen will face a water shortage of 890 million cubic meters by 2030.
Apart from supplying water in Shenzhen, Dongjiang water is also one of the main water resources in Hong Kong. We, living in Hong Kong, should also share the responsibility to cherish water and participate in water conservation!
